What are the unique characteristics of the Betterguards System?
The Betterguards Technology offers maximum flexibility (as it is essential), along with adaptive protection against injuries. Compared to rigid systems, like splints or reinforcing elements, the Betterguards System allows complete mobility in the physiological range and does not restrict the movement. When triggered by a critical velocity, the system protects the joint within milliseconds and is able to absorb high forces faster than the muscles themselves.
What is the expected lifetime of the Betterguards System?
We have developed and built our own testing bench specifically to assess the lifetime of our Betterguards System. This so-called “steady load testing bench” simulates the cyclic loading experienced by the Betterguards System during usage. The results indicate that the Betterguards System has a durability of more than two million loading cycles, which equivalent to two years of daily physical activity. No age-related failure could be determined so far and it is assumed that the Betterguards System endures beyond the analyzed time span. Currently, additional tests are being conducted to verify this assumption.
Where can the Betterguards System be implemented?
Betterguards Technology can be implemented into a wide range of products for the protection of different joints such as shoes, orthoses, supports, and protectors. Areas of application in the field of medical engineering, sports & recreation, and occupational safety have been approved and are currently realizable. Additionally, we will target other areas like industrial applications, in the near future.
Is the Betterguards System resistant to humidity and sweat?
Yes, all components of the Betterguards System are resistant to humidity, saltwater, and sweat.
In what temperature range can the Betterguards System operate?
The optimal temperature range is between -10°C and 45°C. However, even at temperatures ranging from -25°C and 65°C our Betterguards System remains functional. That being said, it is to keep in mind that very cold temperatures lead to a marginal premature activation of the Betterguards System, whereas higher temperatures induce a minimally delayed activation. In the named ranges, this does not affect the protective effect of our Betterguards System. When worn close to the body, the system’s temperature remains relatively constant due to body heat.
Are there different versions of the Betterguards System available for different kind of sports or users?
The Betterguards System works for users of any height and weight. The activation time of the Betterguards Technology can be made faster or slower depending on requirements for preventive and rehabilitative use. Therefore we are also in the position to tap into areas of applications away from the human body.
Does permanently wearing a preventive Betterguards System weaken the surrounding musculature?
Conventional, rigid ankle braces restrict the natural movement of your ankle. The Betterguards System provides full freedom of motion combined with intelligent protection. All of your muscles remain stimulated and trained while wearing the Betterguards System.
Does the system have to be replaced after being activated in a severe inversion?
The Betterguards System activates to protect your joints within milliseconds! Once the force has been removed, the device turns to its flexible state. It does not have to be replaced and is immediately ready to protect you again, similar in theory to the safety belt in a car.
Does protecting the ankle joint have a negative effect on other joints, for example, the knee joint?
Different studies have investigated the influence of an ankle brace on the kinematics of the knee during sports. It was shown that even though the kinematic of the knee is slightly altered, no higher chance of an injury is expected. And unlike conventional orthotics, the Betterguards System does not limit the freedom of movement.
How much does the Betterguards System cost?
